Interns’ Reflections

Emilie W. Spring, 2020, Mount Mary University

“I feel so incredibly lucky to have been placed with the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin! As a dietetic intern, Cindy created an experience to highlight the many career opportunities available in renal and community nutrition.

She provided opportunities to meet with and learn from a variety of kidney professionals and patients. Further personalizing the internship opportunity, Cindy took the time to design and develop projects that fit my career focus using the skill sets I have and continually pushing me to be better.

The work environment at the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin was incredibly supportive. Amanda, always organized and welcoming, made sure I had the resources I needed to complete many projects. Plus, I had the opportunity to interact with the dedicated group of volunteers that come in weekly.

The National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin provided me with an incredible learning opportunity as well as connections I’ll build on in my career. Thank you!”

“I am currently a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in Gender and Women’s Studies and Non-Profit Leadership. My internship at the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin gave me the priceless opportunity to gain applicable work experience in the non-profit field. Throughout the summer I had multiple opportunities to attend events in the community with the NKFW and I was able to utilize my individual strengths to work as part of a team. The entire staff and volunteers were incredibly helpful and willing to guide and assist me with any questions that I had.

The CEO, Cindy Huber, took me under her wing and introduced me to the ins and outs of what it takes to work in a non-profit. Cindy altered my internship to revolve around topics that I am interested in and passionate about, giving me projects that catered to those topics. Cindy also helped connect me to multiple non-profit leaders in the Milwaukee area. I am extremely grateful for the connections that I made and the opportunities that I was given while at the NKFW this summer.”

“Interning at the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin means new experiences every day! As a marketing intern, I was able to dabble in many different meaningful projects related to the Capital City 5K and other events throughout the summer. Besides being able to gain so much experience, I was able to meet and work with some really great volunteers and interns all summer. The entire NKFW team was supportive as I contributed new ideas and feedback in meetings and was able to build off each others plans. I am excited to take what I have learned here to a future career in event planning and marketing!

Cindy, the CEO, was very gracious to allow me to take on an important project developing policy around kidney donation that helped me grow as a professional, network and experience the true breadth and forms of public health work in a community. The team of employees, volunteers and interns were welcoming, supportive and helpful while I navigated through my project. My semester interning here was an invaluable experience that pushed me out of my comfort zone, held me to high expectations and resulted in me producing quality work that will help others and the NKFW as they continue to provide needed services to the community. I am so thankful to have been given the opportunity to work with such caring and driven individuals and would recommend the NKFW for aspiring professionals wanting a meaningful experience.”
