Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) in Wisconsin  

  • 1,726 Wisconsin residents were newly diagnosed with Stage 5 kidney disease in 2005*US Transplant Games Team Wisconsin Participant
    • 62% of those are men
    • 82% are over the age of 50
    • 1 out of 5 are minority individuals
  •  68% of new cases are caused by diabetes (42%) and
     high blood pressure (26%)
  • 4,601 men and women rely on dialysis,
    an “artificial kidney” machine to live.
     
  • 530 Kidney transplants were performed in Wisconsin in 2005.
    • 1,284 people were still waiting for a kidney transplant

The National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin (NKFW) is a non-profit, 501c (3), health charity that is dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary diseases; improving the health and well-being of all affected by these diseases; increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation.

The NKFW is committed to reducing the impact of chronic kidney disease (CKD) through its free screenings and community education events; patient and professional programs; public policy and advocacy initiatives; organ and tissue donor awareness activity; community collaborations and direct support for kidney-related research.

By providing free informational materials, educational programs, and support for individuals and families affected by CKD, and the professionals who care them, the NKFW is Wisconsin’s leading public health resource on CKD.

The NKFW receives no government or national funding and relies solely on contributions from individuals, companies and organizations.
