 Last year's symposium, entitled "Patient Quality Care: Emerging Issues and New Approaches for Clinical Practices" was held on Thursday, September 27, 2007, in Deforest, WI. Shad Ireland, author and the first dialysis patient to compete in and complete an Iron Man Triathlon, was the keynote speaker.

Each year, the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin provides thousands of dollars worth of brochures and other educational information to dialysis units, transplant centers, nephrology offices and other health professionals, free of charge. Materials are available to educate patients and those at-risk of developing chronic kidney disease.

Many brochures and fact sheets are available online at www.kidney.org .

Printed materials that are not available online are provided free of charge by the National Kidney Foundation of Wisconsin; monetary contributions are welcomed to help defray the costs of purchasing, processing and shipping of these orders.

Managing Bone and Mineral Metabolism: A Case Study Approach

This program will help educate clinicians on how to prevent bont and mineral metabolism abnormalities in patients with stages 3 or 4 CKD, manage patients with hypercalcemia, provide intervention for patients with stage 5 CKD who are not reaching KDOQI goals, and overcome CKD management challenges in patients with stage 5 CKD who are not adherent to recommendations.

Malnutrition is common in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is associated with poor patient outcomes.
