"I have been an advocate for organ donation for more than seven years now, and I am a firm believer that I didn't choose this cause - it chose me. Little did I know that when I checked the box on my driver's license to become an organ donor in April 2002 it would come to signify so much. Just four years later, that same month, a close friend of mine passed away suddenly at the age of 17. I had always thought being an organ donor was the right thing to do, but until the loss of my friend, I did not realize the importance of organ donation and how many lives it affects each day. My friend, Brooks Norfleet Berry, saved four lives by donating five organs, his heart valves, and eye tissue. In the face of his death, he and his family gave life. There is no greater gift in the world than this.
At such a young age, it was vital that Brooks had made that choice, understood the magnitude of his decision, and had talked to his family about his wishes. Four years later, I was fortunate enough to honor his legacy by working with legislators in my home state of Virginia to pass House Joint Resolution 190, declaring the anniversary of his death, April 9, 2010, and each succeeding year, as Teen Organ Donation Awareness Day. As part of National Donor Month, this day serves to honor teen donors, educate teens on organ donation, and encourage organizations to embrace organ donation education.
The headquarters for the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) are located in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia, and I was fortunate enough to partner with them to help promote this worthy cause to more than 16,000 people during one of the largest outdoor concerts the city has ever had. My efforts promoting this cause also brought me to become close with a family I now call my own. I didn't know it at the time, but the father, Rick McKinney, is a transplant recipient, owing his life to a heart valve transplant. Through my work with local organ procurement centers and UNOS, and my personal connection to this cause, I have seen firsthand the impact organ donation can have and how vital it is to spread that message. I am proud to promote such a worthy cause and help others understand the importance of choosing to become an organ donor."
